Why Do Gurus Tell Their Secrets? Tue, 12 Jul 2005 15:50:38 +0000 I was asked, “I can’t understand why so many gurus are so willing to sell their ’secrets’. I tend to think that they would want to keep them for themselves and continue enjoying their incredible successes. Why are you doing it?” This week’s NPT answers that question along with: - What Happened to Article Announcer?

The next generation of keyword evaluation 2005-07-15T01:01:50Z We’ve been hearing that our keyword states are confusing… In the coming weeks, we’re aiming to change all that. Read on to learn about changes we’ll be making to our keyword evaluation system, as told by Bindu R., an AdWords Product Manager.
We heard from you that trying to advertise with our current keyword states is like playing keyword roulette. You never know what keyword state will be assigned, and you sometimes can’t run on your most important keywords. In the coming weeks we’ll make changes to simplify our keyword states and give you more control to run on the keywords that you find valuable. Here are the improvements that you’ll see:
Simplified Keyword States: Keywords will be placed in to one of two states – active or inactive. People like the idea of something that’s a little more binary - on/off, day/night, hot/cold – you get the picture.
Increased Control: We’re replacing the static USD $0.05 minimum bid for all keywords with a minimum bid that varies based on the quality of your keyword and ad text. High quality keywords (determined by the Quality Score) will have minimum bids as low as $0.01, while keywords with a lower Quality Score will be assigned higher minimum bids. As long as the maximum CPC meets the minimum bid, your keyword will be active. You no longer have to worry about on hold, in trial, or disabled keywords.
We’re giving you the control you asked for so you can run on the keywords that are important to your business. We hope that these changes will let you sleep soundly. Feel better already? Learn more about these changes with our new simplified keyword states and added control and what you can do in the coming weeks here.

Sublime 2005-07-14T13:07:02Z
There is an article in today’s New York Times’ online edition. The story will probably be available for two weeks or so before you would need to retrieve it from their archives. It is a brief story of a woman who started her own spice company. From the article and from the woman’s website, I feel like I can start to smell and taste these exotic flavors. Makes me think about the journey of man and how hundreds of years ago humans were drawn to these, driven by the desire to bring back the luscious and decadent herbs and spices that would transform the ordinary to the sublime! I highly encourage you to take a moment to read the Time’s article and then visit the woman’s website. I’m sure I’ll be ordering some canisters of spices in a few weeks. The one I’m most interested, is the Australian Wattle Seed. There are also recipes on the website for use with these herbs and spices. If you try anything, or buy anything, let me know. I’ll do the same. Specifically the Wattle Seed Creme Brulee. WOOF! New York Times article: For The Spice Rack That Has EverythingI might repost the article later, so that future blog readers will have easy access. If I do, I’ll change the link. nirmala’s kitchen: BRING HOME THE EXOTIC~^~^~^~^~

Colors You Should Never Have In Your Tackle Box. Thu, 14 Jul 2005 00:18:1 I have been fishing with an old friend lately named Joe. I have known him since he was born 38 years ago, 39 tomorrow. Happy Birthday Joe!
We have been fishing at a lake I love to fish, mainly because of the big bass there. If you’re a Bass Fishing Newsletter Subscriber http://www.bassfishingweekly.com/newsletter/newsletterindex.html you know where I’m talking about. Anyway, if you look in most peoples tackle boxes you will find normal color lures like grape, black, brown, purple, and the normal colors for lures. Joe is a different story......
When you look in Joe’s tackle box you see some of the ugliest lures you have ever seen. Lures like a bright green tube that you almost need sunglasses to look at it. Or his green frog that is so far from any color of a frog that you wonder where he got it and why anyone would purchase that color to begin with to fish for bass.
So, what is my point? Well, he catches bass on these damn lures. I mean I wouldn’t even want people to know I even have them in my tackle box but he is proud as he can be of them and uses them regularly and catches fish with them. I have to start asking myself if maybe I should invest in a few of them. They go against everything I have ever read about choosing a color to fish in stained water. He has caught bass with them on sunny days, cloudy days and days when it was raining.
The first time he used them and hooked two bass, I thought it was just luck. Well, then he caught two more bass tonight on them while I didn’t even have a good strike, using the normal colored lures most bass fishermen use. Not some flourescent damn bright green things like he uses.
Ok, now if you read most articles about fishing stained water, you will read to use dark colored lures like black and grape because the dark colors in stained water show up better. I might have to change my perception on this if he continues to catch fish the way he does on these flourescent colors.
Well I was informed tonight, he has a lure that he made and he has never seen another lure like it anywhere. I can hardly wait to see this thing. I bet it is bright pink or something. He also tells me he has caught bass on it. If this lure come out to be another flourescent bright color like he has been using and catches bass, I am going to tell him the new rules are that he can’t use them anymore when we fish together because the colors embarrass me when people see them..
So, you might be asking yourself....what is the point in this post? I am going to tell you here and now. Just because you have never read about a pro using a different color lure doesn’t mean it isn’t going to work and catch bass. If nothing else, Joe has made me a believer in that statement. Just because you have never seen a color in another humans tackle box doesn’t mean it isn’t any good.
I am going to start buying bright colored lures like I would have never dreamed of owning before this year fishing with Joe. Then when someone laughs at me and makes statements to me, like I did Joe and I drag in the bass using it, they will probably be buying these damn bright flourescent colors too.
The last thing he said to me tonight after his usual bragging (the rare times he catches more fish than me) was "Hey, maybe you should go to http://www.bassfishingweekly.com and read some of the articles there".
Happy Birthday Joe....maybe I let you catch the most bass because it’s your birthday tomorrow.....maybe not.

Your questions about account management tools 2005-07-13T01:55:00Z Thanks to everyone who wrote in after our post on campaign management tools. I just wanted to respond to a couple of the emails we received from our readers.
Cheryl C. wrote in asking for a new tool to find and edit destination URLs:
One new tool that I would like to see from Google in addition to the new Find/Edit CPC, the Find/Edit Ad Copy, and the Find/Edit Display Url, is a Find/Edit Destination Url tool... You’re in luck, Cheryl! The Find/Edit Ad Text tool allows you to locate ads by destination URL and replace destination URLs. Just pinpoint the ads you’d like to change and choose the ’replace destination URL’ option to change the URLs. I’ve included a screenshot of the tool below to help illustrate my explanation:

Eric L., another Inside AdWords reader, wrote:
The 3 tools described would benefit greatly from having more powerful search options. You can look for ads that contain "roses" but not ads that contain "roses" but do not contain "sale" as just one example. Being able to search multiple terms, with a mix of phrase matching, broad matching and negative matching capabilities would boost the helpfulness of these tools substantially.
Thanks for your feedback, Eric. I’ve already forwarded your excellent suggestion along to the right team.

Blake's hidden gem o' the week 2005-07-12T01:53:29Z If there’s one thing I like, it’s a good weekly feature - so, I think I’ll just start one! I’m going to call it "Blake’s hidden gem o’ the week."
I should probably explain just a bit this first week, but in following weeks, I’ll just write a really quick post with a link a resource that you’ll probably be glad to know about. And, as the title implies, I’ll post these weekly, though the actual day of the week may vary.
The whole idea behind this series comes from having worked with a few thousand advertisers over the years, and realizing that many of them were unaware of some really useful information in the Help Center on the AdWords site. Actually, you’ll find just about anything you’d need to know to run your AdWords account successfully in there, if you spend a few minutes looking. As it turns out, I’ve spent lots of hours in the AdWords Help Center - and have some personal favorites.
Today’s Hidden Gem is the AdWords Demos and Guides page, on which you’ll find eight brief Macromedia Flash demos. In order to entice you to visit the Demos and Guides page, I’ll only mention two of them. Want some Optimization Tips? Well, you know where to go. Need help Understanding Conversion Tracking more deeply? Yep, it’s there too.
Take a little tour - I think you’ll be glad you did. As for myself, I can’t wait till next week. This should be fun!
